Greenlights by Matthew McConaughey

My Rating of “Greenlights” by Matthew McConaughey: 8 / 10

How does one look at life? McConaughey uses traffic lights as those moments in time when we can move forward. As opposed to red and yellow lights where the world stands in our way. Live your life with those green lights – keep moving forward, learning, growing etc. This is what attracted me to this book!

The book chronicles Matthew McConaughey’s life using his green lights approach. We’ve all seen the easygoing Matthew McConaughey develop his career from the go-to romantic comedy lead to an Academy Award winning actor. Yet there is a little bit more to it than hitting green lights. McConaughey is all about “livin” and throughout the book teaches us lessons using metaphor. He constantly provides aphorisms, poems and bumper sticker recommendations on where he has failed and moved on quickly.

It is an easy and quick book to read. I listened to the audiobook to enjoy McConaughey’s southern silky voice narration telling his own story. With that said it did make me think about potential adjustments on how I go about “livin.”

Three key takeaways from the book:

  1. Alight, alright, alright is good metaphor on living life. Keep moving forward, and don’t let things outside of your control take you off track. It seems to have worked for McConaughey.
  2. You get what you want when you stop wanting it so much.
  3. Everything you do is part of the plan. Sometimes the plan goes as intended and sometimes it doesn’t. That’s part of the plan too.
