Review: Wheat Belly by William Davis

Wheat Belly: Lose the Wheat, Lose the Weight, and Find Your Path Back to Health
Wheat Belly: Lose the Wheat, Lose the Weight, and Find Your Path Back to Health by William Davis
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Wheat Belly is an in depth review of wheat, from its evolution since introduction over 10,000 years ago to the wheat billions of us eat every day. Davis takes you through the A to Z on all things wheat. From the various wheat strains that have been genetically altered over the last 50ish years in order for the crop to be more resilient to the processing that occurs. This ultimately drives us the consumers to eat more of it!

I’ve read a lot of books on wheat, carbohydrates, paleo and the like. What I like about this book is the amount of detail on wheat and how it can affect your body in the short term and the long term. Conversely it is just focussed on wheat and not the vast range of other carbohydrates that are mass marketed these days and can impact your health just as much.

As Davis is a Doctor, he spends a lot of time throughout the book going through real life examples of the benefits from cutting wheat out of his patients diet. These examples, based on his medical practice, show significant improvements with weight loss and the reversal of diabetes.

If you’re after a book focused on just wheat then this is the one to go for. Otherwise go looking for something a little more generic. It is definitely on the mark with what our population should be focused on but there is a wider ranging set of health issues to deal with.
